IHI Seminar Series - An interprofessional approach to exploring and addressing opioid medication safety

This IPE seminar will focus on the importance of medication safety in pain management involving opioids. Sean Patenaude from CAMH will present his personal story regarding opioid use and encounter with the healthcare system, and introduce incident reporting from both a patient and systems-level perspective. Ambika Sharma from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices Canada (ISMP Canada) will then provide an overview of the Canadian Incident Analysis Framework, Swiss Cheese Model, and hierarchy of effectiveness. Using a real-world case study involving an opioid-related incident at a community hospital, students will have the opportunity to work together within interprofessional groups to apply their knowledge of medication safety to identify causes of medication error, develop a care plan, and discuss their unique contributions and roles within an interprofessional team for improved patient outcomes.

Food and refreshments will be provided (with support from the Student Initiative Fund).
